What Is a Poker Solver? A Plain-English Guide to GTO

If you have spent any time in serious poker forums, you have probably heard players talk about “running it through a solver” or “what does the solver say?” It can sound like a black box reserved for math wizards. It is not. A poker solver is simply a program that computes a game-theoretically optimal strategy for a given poker situation — and understanding what that means can genuinely change how you think about the game.

What Does “GTO” Actually Mean?

GTO stands for Game Theory Optimal. In poker, it refers to a strategy that cannot be exploited by your opponents. If you play a perfectly GTO strategy, your opponent has no adjustment they can make to profit against you — any deviation they take will either break even or cost them money.

The concept comes from Nash equilibrium, an idea from game theory named after mathematician John Nash. A Nash equilibrium is a set of strategies where no player can improve their outcome by changing only their own strategy, given that everyone else keeps theirs. In a two-player zero-sum game like heads-up poker, the Nash equilibrium is exactly the GTO solution.

In practice, full GTO play for all of No-Limit Hold’em is computationally unsolvable — there are too many decision points. Solvers instead solve specific spots: a particular preflop raise, a flop bet on a specific board texture, a river bluff-catching decision.

What Does a Solver Actually Compute?

Feed a solver a situation — say, the big blind facing a button open-raise — and it will iterate through millions of game-tree branches until it finds a balanced strategy for both players. The output is not “do X.” It is a set of frequencies.

For example, the solver might say that with ace-king suited in the big blind, the correct play is to 3-bet 68% of the time and call 32% of the time. Play it the same way every time and your opponent can read you; mix your actions at those frequencies and you become unexploitable.

This is called a mixed strategy, and it is one of the most counterintuitive things new solvers users encounter. You are supposed to sometimes do different things with the same hand, not because you are guessing, but because the math demands it.

The solver also outputs expected value (EV) for each action, which tells you how many chips each decision is worth over the long run.

What Does the Output Look Like?

Most solvers display results on a 13×13 grid — the classic preflop range chart. The grid covers all 169 possible starting hand combinations:

  • Pocket pairs run diagonally from AA in the top-left to 22 in the bottom-right
  • Suited hands (e.g., AKs) sit above the diagonal
  • Offsuit hands (e.g., AKo) sit below the diagonal

Each cell is color-coded by action and frequency. A cell might be solid green (always raise), half green and half yellow (raise 50%, call 50%), or red (fold). At a glance you can see the shape of an entire range.

Desktop Solvers vs. Browser Solvers

Traditional solvers like PioSOLVER and GTO+ are powerful desktop applications, but they require a strong local machine, file management, and a meaningful time investment to learn. Results often take minutes per spot to compute, and the workflow is not designed for quick study sessions.

Who Actually Benefits from Using a Solver?

The short answer: any player who wants to understand why strategy works, not just memorize what to do.

  • Regulars grinding midstakes cash games or small MTTs can close leaks systematically rather than guessing from table feel.
  • Coaches can show students concrete EV numbers instead of relying on subjective arguments.

You do not need to understand the math deeply to benefit. The output is visual and the logic, once you spend a few hours with it, becomes intuitive: tight early, wide on the button, always bluff at frequencies that keep your opponent indifferent.

The Right Way to Think About Solvers

A solver is not a substitute for thinking at the table. It is a study tool. You bring a hand history or a spot you are confused about, run the solver, and ask: what is the shape of the correct strategy here, and why? Over time you internalize patterns — how board texture changes c-bet frequency, how stack depth shifts range construction, where bluffs should live in a well-balanced range.
