5 Poker Leaks a Solver Will Instantly Expose

Most poker leaks are invisible from the inside. You feel like you are playing solid, disciplined poker — and then you look at your results over 100,000 hands and something is clearly wrong. A solver cuts through that self-delusion immediately. Unlike reviewing your own hand histories, where you can rationalize almost any decision, the solver just shows you the EV of each action. The gap between what you did and what is correct is right there, in chips.

Here are five of the most common poker leaks that solvers expose, often within the first few spots you review.

1. Over-Folding to 3-Bets

This is probably the most widespread leak in small- and midstakes poker, and it is easy to develop. You open, someone 3-bets, and folding feels safe. No stack at risk, no tough spot — just wait for the next hand.

The problem is that if you fold too often to 3-bets, you become trivially exploitable. An opponent who notices you folding more than 60–70% to 3-bets can start 3-betting almost any two cards from position and print chips against you.

What a solver shows: The correct response to a 3-bet depends heavily on position and stack depth, but solvers consistently defend a much wider range than most players use. Against a button 3-bet after you opened from the cutoff, the solver typically calls or 4-bets over 40% of the time. It also uses a significant 4-bet bluffing frequency — something many players skip entirely because it feels aggressive.

The fix: Widen your 3-bet defense. Know which hands are pure calls, which are 4-bet bluffs, and which 4-bet for value. The solver will show you the exact splits.

2. Under-Bluffing Rivers

On the river, the pot is at its largest and many players shift into “showdown mode” — calling down with marginal hands and giving up on bluffs. It feels prudent. In practice, it makes your river betting range heavily weighted toward value, which any observant opponent can exploit by folding to river bets far more often.

What a solver shows: On most runouts, a balanced river betting range requires a specific ratio of value bets to bluffs — roughly 2:1 to 3:1 for common sub-pot sizings (pot-sized bets ≈ 2:1, half-pot ≈ 3:1 to 4:1), with only large overbets pushing toward something closer to 1.5:1. If you check every busted draw on the river, you are bluffing at zero frequency. Your value bets become obvious, and your opponents face an easy call-or-fold decision against a range they can read.

The fix: Identify your natural bluff candidates — hands that have no showdown value (missed draws, air) and that block your opponent’s calling range. The solver will tell you which hands in your range to bluff and at what frequency. Even adding a few well-timed river bluffs dramatically reduces how exploitable you are.

3. Wrong C-Bet Sizing and Frequency

Continuation betting (c-betting) is automatic for many players: you raised preflop, you bet the flop. But c-betting without thinking about sizing or board texture can be a significant leak in two directions — either you c-bet too often (turning clear check-backs into money-burning bets) or you bet a single size in every spot (leaving equity on the table).

What a solver shows: Solvers almost never use a single c-bet size across all boards. On dry, low paired boards (like 7-2-2 rainbow), they bet small — typically 25–33% pot — at high frequency. The preflop aggressor has range advantage through overpairs, but the range is not polarized enough to justify a large size; a small bet extracts value across a wide portion of the range. Large, polarized bets belong on textures where the aggressor’s range is genuinely bifurcated — ace-high dry boards like A-7-2 rainbow, for instance, where the raiser holds most of the aces. On wet, high, coordinated boards (like Q-J-T with two suits), they check at higher frequencies, because the caller’s range hits these boards hard and over-betting is costly.

Frequency also shifts. On boards that connect well with a wide caller’s range, the solver checks the flop more often — sometimes with strong hands, to protect a checking range that can be bet on later streets.

4. Calling Too Wide Out of Position

Calling a raise when you are out of position — particularly from the small blind — is one of the most punishing situations in poker. You will face tough decisions on every street, with less information and no ability to control the pot. Many players compensate by telling themselves they will “play well postflop,” but the math often says the call was the mistake before a flop card was dealt.

What a solver shows: When you plug in a small blind call versus a button open, the solver is often surprisingly tight on which hands it calls versus 3-bets. It prefers 3-betting many hands that players typically flat — because 3-betting allows you to win the pot immediately or at least reduce the positional disadvantage. Calling wide and passive from out of position is a recipe for a lot of negative EV decisions across four streets.

The fix: Review your out-of-position calling ranges against common steal positions. You will likely find that some hands you are calling should be 3-bets, and some hands you think are obvious calls are actually close to fold territory when you factor in positional disadvantage.

5. Ignoring Board Texture

“I had top pair, I bet” is a reasonable heuristic at the lowest stakes. As you move up, it becomes a liability. Board texture — the specific combination of high cards, connectedness, and suits — dramatically changes who benefits from which runout and how both players’ ranges interact with it.

What a solver shows: On an ace-high, dry board like A-7-2 rainbow, the preflop raiser (who has more aces in their range) has a massive range advantage. They can bet with a lot of frequency and at larger sizes. On a board like 8-6-5 with two spades, the caller’s range (which contains more suited connectors and small pairs) may actually have the equity advantage, and the raiser’s c-bet frequency drops sharply.

When you bet every flop at the same frequency regardless of texture, you are betting too much on boards that hurt you and not enough on boards that favor you. Solvers quantify this precisely: for any given board, you can see the range advantage, the recommended c-bet frequency, and the preferred sizing.

The fix: Before your session, study two or three different board textures in a solver. Look at how range advantage shifts and how that changes the recommended strategy. Over time, reading boards — and quickly intuiting who benefits — becomes second nature.

Every leak on this list shares the same root cause: playing on autopilot rather than responding to what the situation actually calls for. Solvers force you to confront the actual EV of every decision, which is uncomfortable at first and genuinely useful over time.
